Riverside staple Southern Roots prepares to close its doors

After nearly a decade of serving the Jacksonville community with vegan and gluten-free baked goods and coffee, Southern Roots will be closing for good on New Years Eve.

Back in August, Southern Roots took to Instagram to explain the rent issues, stating that after Southern Root’s landlord died last year, the building’s trustees sold it, and the new buyer “proposed a rental rate increase of almost 400%.” Many of the comments on the announcement express sympathy for the café, and hopes that it will reopen in another location nearby.
