'What Rocco did become was the best dog a family could hope for.'
Rocco was my granddog. I was with my son, daughter-in-law and two granddaughters when they adopted him over 13 years ago. It also happened to be the oldest granddaughter’s sixth birthday. She was so hoping to get a dog that day and burst into tears when she found out the two miniature dachshunds they had planned to adopt were being kept by their foster caregivers. The younger granddaughter, on the other hand, was not looking forward to having a dog.
From the moment we all, except for the youngest granddaughter, set eyes on what looked like a black Labrador Retriever we fell in love. However, my daughter-in-law was hoping for a small dog. Needless to say, Rocco won her over and then some. Although having a dog was my son’s desire Rocco latched onto his new mama with a vengeance. From the day they brought Rocco home he was a mama’s boy, from sitting in her lap as she read to following her to bed at night.
What Rocco did become was the best dog a family could hope for. It didn’t take long for him to win over my youngest granddaughter’s heart and turn her into the animal lover she is today. The bond he formed with the oldest granddaughter, by sharing his adoptive day with her birthday, was never more apparent last summer as she was preparing to leave for college in the fall. They became inseparable.
As for my son, Rocco became his best buddy. That might have something to do with all the pizza he fed him. For me, Rocco was my official greeter whenever I came to visit. He was always so glad to see me, no matter how long since my last visit, since I live out of state. Of course, that might have had something to do with the treats I always brought him.
Although I am looking forward to my next visit with my family it will be be bitter sweet. I cannot imagine walking into the house without him there to greet me with his doggy kisses.
