The Rockets pulled off the win without Jalen Green, Alperen Sengun and Kevin Porter Jr....

Detroit Pistons guard Jaden Ivey passes as Houston Rockets forward Tari Eason, center, and guard Daishen Nix defend during the first half of an NBA basketball game, Saturday, Jan. 28, 2023, in Detroit. DETROIT — The Rockets began the game missing irreplaceable players. They ended it missing shots, and making that somehow work.

The Pistons went to veteran guard Alec Burks, who had staked them to their fourth-quarter lead. But Rockets rookie Jabari Smith Jr. tied him up and won the jump ball, sending the ball to Eric Gordon, who was promptly fouled. Ivey had a good look at a 3 to tie, but when he missed, the Rockets escaped with an impressive, if somewhat inexplicable win.

But when center Alperen Sengun was a late scratch with an illness, the Rockets were without their three leading scorers and three leaders in assists per game. A stretch with turnovers on three of four possessions kickstarted a Pistons run. The Rockets had as many turnovers in the third quarter as in the first half. The Pistons went back in front.
