Benny Montgomery’s got a funky swing. But he just keeps hitting.
Theat No. 8 overall out of Red Land High School in Pennsylvania tore up Low-A Fresno in his first true professional test last year. Montgomery, 20, slashed .313/.394/.502 in 56 games and projects to start 2023 in High-A Spokane.
Montgomery’s swing is still a bit rigid but he’s got plenty of bat speed, hand-eye coordination, and raw tools, including “plus” speed and a “plus” arm in the outfield. Montgomery, a centerfielder, only has 14 career steals so far, however. That speed shows up on defense, putting Montgomery on the shortlist of potential future everyday center fielders at Coors Field. Also on that list is top prospect Zac Veen and MiLB Gold Glove Award winner Brenton Doyle, who is now on the 40-man roster. Montgomery is much more of an unproven prospect than Veen and Doyle, so he’ll have to have another show-’em year in 2023. If all goes to plan, he could be with Double-A Hartford by the season’s end.
