San Diego State’s basketball team practiced Tuesday morning, bused to the airport and flew to Denver ahead of Wednesday night’s game at Colorado State.

It was greeted by Winter Storm Iggy, with what forecasters warned could be 15 inches of snow, 35 mph winds and “treacherous” conditions. The Aztecs, however, got their annual slap-in-the-face reminder three days earlier, inside the warm, fuzzy confines of Viejas Arena — a frustrating 76-67 loss against New Mexico that ended a 16-game home win streak and offered a harsh lesson about how treacherous conditions can be in this conference.

It’s a familiar scenario: Team having a disappointing season gets geeked up for the Aztecs with a chance to notch a signature win. “We have a target on our back in this league,” senior Adam Seiko said. “Everybody wants to beat us. Whether we’re at home or on the road, it’s the biggest game of the year for everybody. They make it feel that way.”

One possibility was 6-6, 240-pound Marcellus Earlington, USD’s leading scorer, but he opted to stay after an issue transferring class credits. Down four with five seconds left in regulation, Stevens made a 3 and, after a pair of UNLV free throws, another one from just inside midcourt on a line-drive heave with two hands behind his head — think a soccer throw-in — that was released before the buzzer and banked in after it. Down four with 22 seconds left in OT, he hit two more 3s to secure the 82-81 decision.
