Columnist roysj writes about the midterms and run-offs: 'Sure, there are a lot of mad folks out there, and they’re still jumping up and down. Most of us, though, are tired of it.' Read it:
Enter your email to subscribe to Roy’s weekly newsletter, The Barbershop.Don’t get me wrong, mad certainly has its place. Heck, mad fed the roots of our nation’s founding as the colonists had enough of the British being all up in their business and decided to fight for independence. Call it the first insurrection.not todayMad can also lead to madness. Mad drove much of our history.
Mad ignited and sustained police brutality. Mad killed George Floyd and too many kindred Black men and women.Mad caused, in 2008, Congressional Republicans to hold their breath and pout publicly that they would not support any of newly elected President Barack Obama’s agenda. That they would thwart every page.
Mad is draining. And the midterm elections showed we’re tired of it. Most of the mad candidates—folks running on irate instead of ideas about—lost. We want government to govern more than gripe, to seek consensus with minimal conflict, to figure out what’s best for all of us without finger-pointing towards the worst in us.
