Russian military authorities have reportedly begun seeking out soldiers faking sickness, and a mercenary group has sent operatives to Ukraine.

A U.S. think tank says Russian military authorities are offsetting casualties in Ukraine by cracking down on service members faking illness and elevating normally unqualified soldiers to leadership positions.

Drawing on Ukrainian intelligence, the ISW report found that Russian military leaders have begun what it calls the"widespread" practice of promoting non-commissioned officers to the rank of junior lieutenant without meeting education or experience requirements.
