Google News is largely offline in Russia, in what appears to be the latest escalation of the Kremlin's crackdown on sources of independent reporting on its invasion of Ukraine

Google News is largely offline in Russia, in what appears to be the latest escalation of the Kremlin'sAlphabet Inc.'s Google said Thursday that people were having trouble accessing its Google News aggregator website and app, adding that the problems were unrelated to any technical problems on Google's end.

"We’ve worked hard to keep information services like News accessible to people in Russia for as long as possible," Google said. The restriction of Google News comes as Russian regulators have blocked many independent Russian media outlets and Western technology platforms, such as Meta Platforms Inc.'s Instagram.

On Thursday, in the latest such salvo, Russia's telecommunications regulator demanded that YouTube restore a channel associated with the governor of the Russian-annexed Crimea. The regulator has previously demanded the restoration of several other channels. Last weekend, it noted in a news release about demands it has made to YouTube that it has the legal authority to implement "technical measures" against internet platforms.
