After an entire season on the sidelines, an emotional Mohamed Toure made his return for Rutgers against Northwestern.
Toure said the feeling of getting the sack “most definitely” felt familiar. And the star linebacker, who Schiano called a “grown man,” is nowhere near done.It was not easy getting back to this point for Toure, who admits he fought a “mental battle” throughout the process. He was committed to recovering, saying he knew he “was going to do everything I had to do, to chop back to where I was,” but he had to push through the occasional doubt.
When that wasn’t doing his personal rehab, it was popping up in the film room with linebackers Deion Jennings and Tyreem Powell to share tips, or it was giving out pointers from the sidelines in practice, or mentoring young players who needed guidance. It garnered him enough respect to be named a team captain this offseason, a “dream come true” for the N.J. native and a testament to “the kind of respect he has in that locker room,” per Schiano.
“It just shows how they view me,” Toure said. “It meant a lot to me. I was happy. ... I love Rutgers. This is my home, my home-state team. It was a dream come true . My brothers, I appreciate them so much for the way they view me. I’m going to keep being me and lead the way I’ve been leading.” On Sunday, that meant returning to his old self on the field, leading the pack of “dogs” the Scarlet Knights have on the defensive side. After playing 52 productive snaps in a ho-hum Big Ten home win, Toure stood next to Schiano at the front of the line as his team sang the Rutgers alma mater. His pregame tears were replaced with beads of post-game sweat and a smile of satisfaction.
