EXCLUSIVE: Ryan Gosling's new movie TheGrayMan accidentally predicted his role in the Barbie movie by calling his character a Ken doll. 'We did have other versions of that...but we did commit to the 'Ken doll' line. It just seemed the funniest to us.'
Ryan Gosling's role in the forthcoming Netflix thriller The Gray Man accidentally predicted his upcoming role in Greta Gerwig's romantic comedy Barbie. Gosling will star in the Netflix movie alongside Chris Evans and Ana de Armas, with direction by the Russo brothers, known for their work in the MCU. Barbie is currently being shot with direction by Greta Gerwig with a release date of July 21, 2023.
The Gray Man will follow Gosling's Court Gentry aka Sierra Six, a black-ops mercenary forced to go on the run after uncovering incriminating secrets about his agency. The movie was shot in the first half of 2021 in locations around the world, costing $200 million, Netflix's most expensive film to date.
Shockingly, that line pre-dated his involvement in that movie. We tried several alts when we shot [that scene]. We commonly shoot alts. We like to have options in the edit room. So we did have other versions of that beat in the edit room but we did commit to the"Ken doll" line. It just seemed the funniest to us. But by the time we did commit to it in the edit, he was playing Ken.
With Gosling having a variety of roles throughout his career, including rom-coms and action movies, both The Gray Man and Barbie would fit into his wheelhouse. It's nothing more than a coincidence that the brothers included the joke, just an odd aligning of fate that happens on occasion. The coincidence is similar to how Jesse Eisenberg's character made a joke about Facebook in Zombieland before being cast as Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network a year later.
Gosling has been able to deliver in a wide range of roles over his career, from his quiet stoicism in Drive to his flashy earnestness in La La Land. With The Gray Man and Barbie, he couldn't be playing two more different roles, but his ability to embody such a range will surely pay off in both films.
