Alabama's head coach discussed the transfer portal and how it impacts the recruitment and retention of players.
“I’m not mentioning any names, but there’s only like one player that I was really like disappointed that the guy didn’t stay here, and I couldn’t understand why he was leaving,” Saban said, “And all the rest of them, they would have contributed if they stayed and had the right attitude, but it’s their choice.”during his mid-week press conference. However, Saban did discuss the Tide’s philosophy regarding losing players to the portal each season and how that can impact recruitment and retention.
Last fall, Saban discussed the team’s depth issues as a consequence of the portal. Players who would be in line for starting roles jump for what they view as greener pastures elsewhere before they get a chance to compete, Saban reasoned.
