The award was part of $22.1 million in grants for 10 nuclear projects across the country

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the grant is estimated to come to $624,650.that the Department of Energy distributed among 10 projects to advance promising nuclear technologies. The General Atomics project is one of four aimed at breaking down regulatory hurdles.

The Fast Modular Reactor features silicon carbide composite fuel cladding to contain enriched uranium oxide fuel pellets. “Cladding” refers to the outer layer of material and in a nuclear fuel rod, that keeps the fuel contained and allows the heat coming from the core of a reactor to be converted into electricity.
