San Antonio welterweight planning to move training headquarters to Las Vegas

Welterweight Mario Barrios, right, with a 26-2 career record including 17 knockouts, hasn’t fought in nearly a year.Mario Barrios has been using the time off since his last fight nearly a year ago to rest his body and heal his mind. Along the way, some big changes were made.

“I just really wanted to be closer to home,” Barrios said. “And there are more resources in Vegas. It’s so much easier to find sparring there. Now I won’t have to fly someone in and put them up in a hotel. There are so many fighters already in Vegas to use as sparring partners.” Barrios, 27, said he and his sister “have a special bond,” one of the reasons she was elevated to co-trainer. He said the plan is for her and Santos to share training duties.

But back-to-back losses to Davis by TKO in 2021 and Thurman by unanimous decision in 2022 knocked Barrios from the unbeaten ranks and changed views.
