San Antonio’s go-to color consultant Jim Smith says the right hues can set the perfect mood for a home

A colorful front door greets visitors to Phyllis Voltz-Creamer’s home in the Country Estates neighborhood north of Leon Springs.Jim Smith is railing against the home designs so prevalent on websites like Pinterest and Houzz and in magazines such as Architectural Digest and Dwell. In particular, his wrath is directed at the stark whites these arbiters of style present to homeowners, usually to the exclusion of other colors.

To show what he does like, he pulls out a magazine page showing a French salon-type room that’s the antithesis of minimalism. Working with clients, Smith develops extensive color charts specifying multiple hues for everything from a single room to a whole house. Although the couple deviated from some of Smith’s original choices, she said they love the results and the colors chosen.

His path to becoming a color consultant included side trips as a sculptor, time spent in a commune in rural Oregon and separate gigs as a private chef and life model in San Antonio.“This was in 1971, and I had decided it was time for me to come out of the closet,” he said. “And Greenwich Village was the gayest place in the world. You could walk down the street and I can promise you any person you passed was gay, unless they were cleaning apartments.
