The story on monarch butterflies is not as clear, however. Researchers are still questioning whether the availability of tropical milkweed in gardens in late fall may encourage migrants to linger in order to lay their eggs on the still fully leafed tropical milkweed. Birds still can be attracted to feeders to allow easy observation. Use pepper-flavored suet to attract insect eaters and seeds such as safflower seed to attract birds but not squirrels.
