Macy’s is opening up a new store in San Diego County later this year, only this one will be the first of a smaller version compared to the classic department store.
The retailer is leaning into a “small format” for some of its new stores to appeal to a quick and easy shopping experience. Macy’s is coming to the Santee Trolley Square shopping center at 9888 Mission Gorge Road in November. The San Diego County location is one of four that Macy’s announced will be opening across the country this year for a total of 12 small stores. It will be the first in San Diego County and in California.The first few stores were called Market by Macy’s, but the new ones, including the San Diego shop, will just be called Macy’s.
The condensed iterations of Macy’s range in size from 30,000 to 50,000 square feet of space and are located in strip malls. The single-story layout of one of its existing small-format Macy’s resembles the floorplan of Nordstrom Rack, the sister brand to the luxury department store Nordstrom.
