Local labor unions have proposed an ordinance that would cover hotel, janitorial and event center staff.
Hotel workers with Unite Here Local 30 rally outside the Hilton San Diego Bayfront in support of a $25 minimum hourly wage for service workers on Wednesday, May 1, 2024.
They’re asking the San Diego City Council to pass an ordinance establishing a $25 per hour minimum wage for service workers. “They’re making good money but they’re creating poverty jobs, and I think we need our elected officials to say, ‘This isn’t the kind of community that we want to create, with haves and have nots. We want everybody to be able to support their families,’” she said.
Hilton, Marriott and Hyatt are three of the hotel brands with contracts set to expire this year, according to the national Unite Here union.
