The city council hires NewGen Strategies & Solutions to study 'municipalization.'

The word “municipalization” became a hot topic in 2020 and 2021 when the city of San Diego and San Diego Gas & Electric wrestled and eventuallythat retained SDG&E as the provider of gas and electric service within the city’s limits for up to 20 more years.

LaCava said the city expects to receive its first report from NextGen early next year. “While we approved a contract for five years and $3 million ... we want to be very thoughtful and not get ahead of ourselves,” LaCava said. “So we’ll be initiating only the first phase” of the contract and then determine next steps.
