A half-century after the last U.S. combat troops left Vietnam, veterans shared stories about war and their difficult homecomings
Hundreds of veterans and their loved ones gathered Wednesday on the deck of the USS Midway to mark 50 years since the last U.S. combat troops left South Vietnam. The 1,000-foot-long aircraft-carrier museum was awash in silver hair and bomber jackets, as a cold drizzle gave way to heartfelt testimony.
Retired Navy Cmdr. Everett Alvarez, one of the first U.S. POWs during the Vietnam War, spoke to the Midway crowd.
