That was good news for many who spoke up in favor of saving the structure that was a central part of the town’s commercial fishing heyday. DiBernardo also announced at Thursday’s board meeting that there will be a 5 p.m. March 23 public hearing on plans by Phillips 66 for aPort officials determined in November that a full environmental report would not be required. Three neighborhood councils and other groups objected.
The building, critics said, holds significant historical value for the port town and was a symbol of San Pedro’s heritage. More effort should be made to find a new use, they said.
