Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley achieved a significant milestone, joining an elite group of NFL players who have rushed for over 2,000 yards in a single season.
Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley became the ninth player in NFL history to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a season, amassing 2,005 yards. Barkley, who signed a three-year, $37.5 million contract with the Eagles this past offseason, could be extra motivated to break Dickerson’s record against the Giants, his former team. He rushed for 176 yards and a touchdown in the Eagles’ Week 7 victory over the Giants.
Coming into the year, Barkley said he wanted to become an all-time great running back by the time his career was over. Breaking an NFL record would help him accomplish that goal. Three weeks ago, he broke the Eagles’ single-season rushing record of 1,607 yards that was set by running back LeSean McCoy in 2013. Late in the second quarter against the Cowboys, Barkley shattered McCoy’s other record, amassing the most single-season scrimmage yards (2,146) in Eagles history. Through 17 weeks, Barkley has the eighth most rushing yards (2,005) in a single season — placing him ahead of O.J. Simpson and one spot behind Chris Johnson. In a week, he could pass seven more players to be No. 1 on that list
