Addressing those concerns, doctors from those communities came to the legislature on Wednesday calling on the province to make the necessary changes to recruit more staff.

“We’ve turned down physicians on a yearly basis who’ve asked to come practice in our community, but because of their contracts, they can’t,” she said, referring to those who are under agreements to practise in rural/hard-to-recruit areas. “Maybe what we have to do is see is there some opportunities in the middle somewhere here,” Moe said.Article content

It found 36 per cent of family physicians and 30 per cent of specialists say it’s very likely they’ll reduce their work hours. Nearly one in five intend to retire in the next two years.Noting her clinic is already losing two doctors, Adamus said this has been an ongoing issue since 2014. Moe has said the province is addressing staffing shortages through a new plan outlined in the recent provincial budget.

“This is a way to stop the bleeding to allow for some physician recruitment in the community, physician retention and a manageable patient load for those folks, acknowledging the fact that they also serve the surrounding communities,” she said.
