The average investment to do a complete decommissioning and reclamation of a municipal landfill to be in compliance with Ministry of Environment guidelines can be as high as $300,000 to $500,000, she said.

According to the Ministry of Environment, the province has recommended 56 projects to ICIP since 2020, with 21 approved and 35 still under review. For the projects that do get approved, Goulden said while ICIP funding covers the majority of costs, municipalities are still responsible for a portion that can produce a bill as high as $60,000.Landfill maintenance has been “a concern” for several years now, said Goulden. The topic has appeared on SUMA convention agendas as far back as 2016.
