The provincial government has said it’s now considering allowing physician assistants to work and be regulated in Saskatchewan.
“The overall theme of the plan is we’re trying to elevate everybody,” Merriman said. “We’re trying to bring more people in to take the pressure off the people that are within our system. We’ve heard from them; they are challenged and they are frustrated.”
They’ve been used in the Canadian military since the 1950s. In fact, Bryden worked as a physician assistant at Canadian Forces Moose Jaw before moving to Manitoba for work.Article content“When we’re able to see two or three patients at a time with a physician assistant on service, then it totally provides greater access,” Bryden said.But like Saskatchewan, Manitoba has also struggled with surging emergency rooms.
“I do know physician assistants are speeding things up because you’re dealing with a lot of the less critical things that show up in an emergency department,” Bryden said. “It certainly depends on how things are implemented, but there is definitely a role for physician extenders to help with aspects of work,” Gjevre said. “The devil is in the details, and I’m not fully aware of how this is going to be implemented.”Article content
. As well, 9.6 per cent of the 124 respondents said they aren’t employed as an NP at all because there aren’t enough available jobs in their communities.
