Like those of other insects, the life cycle of grasshoppers is strongly influenced by weather conditions. All but one or two prairie species have a single generation per year and lay their eggs in late summer. If available, females select south- or west-facing slopes, including ditches, as these tend to become snow-free and warm up more quickly in the spring.

When warm and dry springs occur in several consecutive years, grasshopper populations can build up massively and ravage seedling crops.
