A winter shoe for the roads
The outsole of my Saucony Peregrine ICE+ 3, showing off the black-and-blue PWRTRAC ICE material that creates traction in icy conditions.Over the past two months, I’ve logged close to 100 kilometres on the ICE+ 3. I took them trail running in Gatineau Park when just a few wisps of early-season snow blanketed the forest paths, ran along the Rideau Canal pathways after they’d been plowed, cruised along sludgy roads and tramped along hard-packed snow in my neighbourhood.
Do they keep me upright on everything? No — and I don’t think any shoe without microspikes can make that claim. As expected, they aren’t great with wet and sheer ice, which I encountered on my trail runs. But I appreciate the traction they provide on mostly dry pavement, loose snow and hard-packed trails when running at easy to tempo pace.
I have chronically tight calves and, after my first hard road run in the ICE+ 3, they felt tighter than normal. That’s when I checked the shoe’s drop — the difference in height between the heel and toe. The ICE+ 3 has a four-millimetre drop, which is half of what my summer racing and training shoes have, and appears to be at the low end for winter shoes on the market.
Ultimately, I like these shoes and feel safe running on the roads with them. They’ve also become my go-to footwear for winter walks. But it’s important to understand the shoe’s limitations; PWRTRAC ICE is good, but it’s not magic and all winter runs should be done with common sense.
