A group of 24 school superintendents from districts across the Southern California region want the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health to change a portion of its on-campus masking policies — specifically as it relates to asymptomatic students and staff who have been closely exposed to a COVID-positive person.

“Requiring asymptomatic students to mask indoors for 10 days is highly disruptive to teaching and learning in many cases,” said Alex Cherniss, Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District superintendent, who signed the Sept. 6 letter addressed to DPH, its director Barbara Ferrer and the LA County Board of Supervisors. “The state doesn’t require this and we are asking the LADPH to align with the state.

The two dozen superintendents represent a smattering of school districts including the Bellflower Unified, Downey Unified, Manhattan Beach Unified, Covina-Valley Unified, South Pasadena Unified, and Redondo Beach Unified School Districts, among others. across LA County. Most announced they wouldn’t require indoor masking, and eased testing requirements, ahead of the 2022-23 school year.
