Witnessing the copulation of two male whales for the first time was a unique event in the behavioral studies of these mammals. Two adult male humpback whales seen off Maui, Hawaiʻi, on January 19, 2022. Whale B has its penis inserted into the genital opening of Whale A.Humpback whales, known for their elaborate songs and large migrations, are some of the planet’s most captivating creatures. They are a species of baleen whales, often weighing up to 36 tons and reaching lengths of 52 feet.
Similar behaviors have been observed in several species, such as walruses, gray seals, dolphins, and killer whales. Interestingly, some observed cases of penis extrusion involve humpback males directing their penises toward other males. In four of these incidents, the males were competing for access to a female, suggesting this behavior may be a way for males to assert dominance.
Biologists seek to understand the evolutionary reasons behind non-reproductive sexual behavior in animals. Possible explanations include practice for future mating, establishing dominance, strengthening social bonds, or even reducing tension within groups.
