Multiple Kauai County agencies searched for the 56-year-old Prakash Shroff of Gilroy for four days by air, land and sea. Unable to locate Shroff, the county suspended efforts on Dec. 28. Shroff was swimming with family members offshore “when they became distressed,” according to a Kauai Fire Department press release. The beach does not have lifeguards, and family members made it back to shore safely with the assistance of bystanders. However, Shroff was nowhere to be found, despite extensive search efforts by Kauai agencies.

“Our hearts go out to Prakash’s family and friends during this difficult time,” said the Kauai Police Department’s investigative services bureau Capt. Paul Applegate in a press release. “We appreciate all agencies and everyone involved in our attempt to locate Prakash.” This is the island’s 12th drowning in 2022, according to Kauai police. In August, an 81-year-old California man, James Pirkle Jr., alsoof fatal injuries to visitors in Hawaii. The state averages 71 drowning deaths per year.
