Groups donate to Rancho Buena Vista High team; San Ysidro Health will honor Carmen Martinez; Oceanside seeking muralist
Saying “it takes a village,” a handful of nonprofit organizations in Vista got together to make sure a local high school cross-country team received what it needed.First steps are being taken to create a new mural in downtown Oceanside as part of an overall “Art that Excites” program.John Herrera of Vista explained the genesis of efforts to aid the cross-country team.
At ceremonies at the school Sept. 8, Herrera, Arthur Lopez from Vista Education Foundation, Mitzie and Garth Hall from Kiwanis and Jaime Castañeda and Dr. Alejandro Paz from the Mixtecos group handed a check to Glennon and Garry Dillard, assistant principal, and 21 members of the cross-country team.A reason to celebrate
The women were tired of daylong trips, transferring from bus to bus with their children in tow, to get to central San Diego for affordable medical care. With the help of some nonprofits and Dr. Ruth Covell, they leased a “little white house,” which they called “La Casita” and convinced three volunteer nurses and two doctors to stop by two afternoons a week. That was in 1969.
The wall is 140 feet by 40 feet, but that’s not all smooth surface. There’s a stairway on one side and an entrance/exit for cars on the other. A request for artists’ proposals says consideration is being given to making some alterations in the stairway, but it makes no promises.Submissions are due by Oct. 30, and an ad-hoc panel of city, community and business leaders will choose finalists, whose work then will be up for a public vote.
