The Seattle Mariners and the Texas Rangers will not begin series play at T-Mobile Park in Seattle on opening day because of the novel coronavirus outbreak

... [+]., governor Jay Inslee of Washington announced that all public gatherings of 250 or more in King, Snohomish and Pierce Counties would be banned for March, and potentially longer. T-Mobile Park, home to the Mariners, is in King County.

The Mariners released a statement saying in part that they “are working with the Major League Baseball Office of the Commissioner on alternative plans” for games that were scheduled for the end of March at T-Mobile Park. The club added that it would provide more information about plans for the games as it became available.

“While we hope to be back to playing baseball in Seattle as soon as possible, the health and safety of our community is the most important consideration,” the Mariners said. It is possible that the government action could push the regular-season opening series between the Mariners and the Rangers to Peoria, Arizona—the site of the Mariners’ spring training facility—given that Texas’ new Globe Life Park is not quite yet ready for games. The season-opening series with the Rangers is set for March 26-29.

In addition to that series with the Rangers, a series with the Minnesota Twins scheduled for March 30 to April 1 will also be affected. While Target Field in Minnesota is an option to relocate that series, the weather could be a factor.
