The ballot measure, proposed by Mayor Bruce Harrell, would renew the expiring tax levy that voters approved in 2016.
$1 billion housing levy to build thousands of affordable housing units, would renew the expiring tax levy that voters approved in 2016. City officials said an estimated 16,000 people are living in homes funded by that housing levy.would nearly triple the tax rate from about 14 cents per $1,000 in assessed property value to 45 cents per $1,000. The median Seattle homeowner would pay about $383 a year – or $32 per month -- based on an assessed value of $855,136, according to the city.
“The housing levy is a proven solution for delivering thousands of affordable housing options,” Harrell said in late March. “Rooted in ourvalues that everyone should have a safe place to call home, this plan invests to meet the scale of the housing crisis, doing more than ever to prevent homelessness.”
“It would mean that we’d have to raise the rents that we’re charging already, and I don’t see the city as being all that efficient with their spending,” Russell explained. “I see them focusing on a lot of special interests.” Russell said she wants the city to work with the public to help benefit everyone, adding, “Focusing on making life better for everybody in Seattle."
