A second 17-year-old has been charged in the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old Jersey City boy in December, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said.

The teen surrendered to detectives with the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit in Jersey City Wednesday. He is charged as a juvenile with murder, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose in theThe teen, whose name is not being released because he’s a minor, is being detained at the Morris County Juvenile Detention Center pending his first court appearance.

Rodriguez, a Snyder High School student, was shot at 11:45 a.m. on Communipaw Avenue near Martin Luther King Drive. “The district is extremely saddened by the loss of another youth to violence,” interim Superintendent Norma Fernandez told The Jersey Journal after Rodriguez’s death. “Pedro was a quiet, respectful young man. ... Our deepest condolences and prayers go to the family and friends as they cope with this horrific tragedy.”

Rodriguez was not attending classes, but his family and the school were looking for options that appealed to him, Fernandez said.on Dec. 27 and he was also charged with murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon.
