We speak to Emmy-winning cinematographer Bob Poole (bobpoolefilms) about his work on the James Cameron-produced NatGeo docuseries SecretsoftheElephants:
Just in time for Earth Day, National Geographic is releasing Secrets of the Elephants, a four-part docuseries produced by James Cameron and narrated by Natalie Portman. Secrets of the Elephants is a follow-up of sorts to Secrets of the Whales, shifting the lens from the largest sea mammals to the largest on land. The series promises to highlight the resilience of these majestic animals, as well as their emotional intelligence and social structures.
That's an extraordinary thing; there hadn't been an elephant born in Namibia that we know of in eight years; well, they'd been born, but hadn't survived, so [it was a] very rare thing to have happen. I was on a long lens, a 50 to 1000. All I saw was legs; it was just elephant legs. The legs parted, and there was a wet pile of baby elephant laying on the ground. I was like, "Oh my God.
There are people who want to force behavior, people who whistle at animals to get them to look or whatever. That's exactly what we don't do. You just sit there and wait until what it is that you saw happen once before happens again, and this time, you're ready and you film it. Bob Poole: Every animal, like you said, is different. For crocodiles, for example, you have to hide from them because they have very keen eyes. Baboons or any kind of primates [also have] really, really sharp eyes, and they can see any little movement and run away. [With] elephants, it's smell. They don't really care what they see, and it took me a long time to figure this out.
