Senator Kirsten Gillibrand introduced a bill to create a data protection agency:
enforce consumer data protection. As marketers continue to grapple with how to comply with California’s new data privacy legislation, a new proposal in Congress could develop a whole agency aimed at enforcing data protection.
One of the first groups to endorse Gillibrand’s plan is the Electronic Privacy Information Center , an independent nonprofit that advocates for consumer privacy. As lawmakers look to regulate how companies deal with Big Data, consumers are also becoming increasingly wary of Big Tech. According to a new survey of 2,000 U.S. adults conducted by Wakefield Research, 95% of respondents thought data privacy laws should do more to protect consumers.
Data privacy is also a top issue that many would like to see play a larger role leading up to the 2020 election. According to the survey’s results, 92% of parents said protecting children’s data should be a top issue, while 73% said they’d support the federal government taking the lead. Meanwhile, 72% of marketing execs agreed that privacy should be a key concern to every presidential candidate.
