Senior Moments columnist Patricia Bunin reflects on some treasures in her life.
The purple bougainvillea that grows gracefully around the arched entrance of my house is my place card. It lets me know I am home.
More importantly, it lets me know I am where I belong. As soon as I pull my car into the driveway, lavender blossoms bow toward me in a breeze so gently only I can feel it. So powerful is the welcome that I am already sinking into it before I reach the front door, often with shoes in hand.“I can’t wait to get back to my place and relax,” she will say after a long day. Her sense of place speaks to me of belonging, as in where I belong in my life.
But my placeholders haven’t always been houses. They were places to daydream that turned into places to write. Since my parents gifted me with a portable Remington typewriter for my 16th birthday, she has been my place card. Maggie, as I named her, came with me to college and later to Greenwich Village and Montreal, and ultimately to California. She grounded me to who I was, no matter where I was.
Maggie typed the first poems I ever sent out for publication. She helped me negotiate the carbon paper and white correction fluid. Rejection slips, and finally an acceptance letter, were stored in her carrying case, a reminder of possibility, every time I opened it. She’s long retired from active work but remains my muse. In an office that houses a desktop computer, a tablet and a smartphone, Maggie is the star. If my future ever dictates a move from my bougainvillea-covered arch, I know Mags will always be my place card.Related Articles
