Senior Sudanese Government Officials Detained In Likely Coup

Military forces in Sudan detained at least five senior government officials on Monday in an apparent military coup, a move that could be a major setback for the North African nation which was in the process of transitioning into a democracy after the 2019 ouster of military dictator Omar al-Bashir.... Bahri, the northern twin city of the capital, to demand the government's transition to civilian rule.the Associated Press, the detained government members include Sudan’s Industry Minister Ibrahim al-Sheikh, Information Minister Hamza Baloul, Sovereign Council member Mohammed al-Fiky Suliman and Faisal Mohammed Saleh, a media adviser of the Prime Minister.

The purported coup has triggered protests on the streets by Sudan’s main pro-democracy group, the Sudanese Professionals’ Association, who also claim that internet and phone lines have been cut off across the country. A successful coup would effectively put to an end Sudan’s attempt to transition into a democracy under a transitional group known as the Sovereign Council.

The whereabouts of Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok remain unknown, but local media reports suggest security forces were stationed outside his home in Khartoum.The detention of government officials on Monday comes after several weeks of rising tensions between the country’s civilian leadership and its military. The confrontation between the two groups was sparked by a failed coup attempt in September.
