It’s hard not to love music that swaddles and transports you to a different place where soul and sound intertwine. Jazz is that music for so many.

Singer Jewel Brown laughs as she talks to Project Row Houses executive director Eureka Gilkey before taking the stage for a celebration of the restoration work underway on the historic Eldorado Ballroom in 2022.My father listened to jazz in the dark. You could hear the soul of the instruments better that way, like tasting the notes of a great wine, he reasoned.

It's also part of the history of this nation and the legacy of Black Americans.Houstonians are reclaiming the city’s jazz history by putting on shows. Here are a few top picks "Jazz has served as a soundtrack to self-determination in this country," Malone said."With every major social-justice movement, jazz has been at the forefront in bringing attention to the challenges we face."

“The thing about jazz is that it’s always been inclusive and democratic, and it has to be collaborative for it to work," Hart said."Since it's inception, jazz has always been a spiritual music. During every period in history, there has been jazz to reflect what is happening. Jazz music comes out of the suffering of Black people but it's inclusive so you have white artists like Stan Getz and Phil Woods who were accepted because they were great musicians.

Daniel Pardo, assistant professor of flute at Prairie View A&M University, wishes jazz would be celebrated much more in this country. He grew up listening to bebop music in his native Colombia and is also a studio musician, working with producers for artists, such as Carlos Santana, En Vogue and Ricky Martin.

Prairie View A&M University also helped to create jazz legends, like the 1940s Co-eds Jazz Band, an all-female band that formed as more men were being drafted to serve in World War II. They broke the gender barriers in a mostly male musical genre. By the end of the war when men returned from service, the woman were replaced with men.
