Sewing: Downtown's new 10-story mural features 11-year-old named Houston

Houston Atlee, 11, rides his new bike in front of his grandmothers house on Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2023 in Houston, TX. Houston Atlee was selected from a group of boys in Shape Community Center’s after school program to recreate his photo for a large mural in downtown Houston. On a downtown building, a Black boy with a sweet face and attentive eyes appears nearly 10-stories-tall, as he holds onto his bike.

"It looks really cool," the soft-spoken Atlee said this week. "I think it's something positive that people can see a Black boy happy." His mother, Shavonne Leon, who calls her son a"mini Kobe Bryant," was speechless when she first saw the mural. So were his older brothers, Marvelous Atlee, 13, and Wisdom Hopkins, 17.

"Everyone assumed it was something negative — that he was involved in a crime or was shot. They all thought the worst," Leon said. "I think we all knew that Houston would get selected, and it's perfect he was the chosen one," she said."This mural represents who we are here for, and Houston represents all the little Black boys riding their bikes, saying, 'Hey, that could be me.'"
