Austin Slater and Cole Waites each took steps toward being ready for Opening Day. Just two weeks away, it leaves little time for Mitch Haniger, who won’t be re-evaluated again for another 7-1…

PEORIA, Ariz. — With Opening Day two weeks away, it is looking less and less likely that the Giants’ highest-priced free-agent addition will be ready for the season. However, what could be the final piece of their bullpen is progressing toward possibly being good to go.

“He’s responded really well to the rehab process. I just don’t think we’ve had enough answers yet,” manager Gabe Kapler said. “We’re just going to gradually build him up. I don’t think there’s any rush to get him ready.” Austin Slater, who missed the first two weeks of games with neuritis in his throwing elbow, made his spring debut in the outfield against the Mariners. In two games as a designated hitter, Slater has gone 1-for-7 with a double and two walks. On Tuesday, he played center field and batted fourth.

Waites, thought to be a leading contender for the final spot in the Giants’ bullpen, threw a live bullpen at the Giants’ minor-league complex. If all goes well, he’ll throw one more and possibly appear in one minor-league game before he’s cleared for Cactus League action.
