Parafencing isn’t a well-known sport, and that’s partly because of lack of awareness, said Bryan Wendell, the director of communications for USA Fencing. Badeaux has lived with cerebral palsy since he was a baby, but you wouldn’t necessarily know that unless you asked him. Aaron Carroll, 41, from Plano, practices parafencing with Nico Badeaux, 25, from Dallas, at the Fencing Institute of Texas in Carrollton on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2023.

Like Badeaux, Carroll lives with cerebral palsy. But because he’s never used a wheelchair, he never considered parafencing as a sport he wanted to try, he said. He fell in love with the sports’ physical and mental challenges.
