Parafencing isn’t a well-known sport, and that’s partly because of lack of awareness, said Bryan Wendell, the director of communications for USA Fencing. Badeaux has lived with cerebral palsy since he was a baby, but you wouldn’t necessarily know that unless you asked him. Like Badeaux, Carroll lives with cerebral palsy. But because he’s never used a wheelchair, he never considered parafencing as a sport he wanted to try, he said. He fell in love with the sports’ physical and mental challenges.
