ShazamFuryOfTheGods director David F. Sandberg comments on the latest release date shuffle for the superhero sequel and the reasoning for it. Yes, it has to do with Avatar 2.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods director David F. Sandberg comments on the recent release date shift of the superhero sequel. Sandberg directed 2019's Shazam! as well as the upcoming sequel, which will again star Zachary Levi as the titular DC hero. The first film was a box-office success, pulling in $366 million worldwide and quickly prompting a sequel to be greenlit. Production wrapped nearly a year ago on Shazam 2, which has been in post-production ever since.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Joining Levi again in the sequel are returning cast members Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, Meagan Goode, Grace Caroline Currey, Adam Brody, Ross Butler, D.J. Cotrona, and Djimon Hounsou, as well as newcomers to the franchise, Lucy Liu, Helen Mirren, and Rachel Zegler. A trailer was released over the summer during Comic Con, promoting a December 2022 release date, which was a shift up for the film, which was originally slated to debut in June 2023.
Warner Bros. Discovery has been at the center of controversy over its DC titles in recent months, beginning with the cancellation of Batgirl, which was slated to debut on HBO Max later this year before being unceremoniously shelved. The studio has also been dealing with the legal issues of The Flash star Ezra Miller, with that title sitting stable at Shazam! Fury of the Gods original release date of June 23, 2023 .
While it's only three months longer of a wait for Shazam! Fury of the Gods, fans are understandably concerned about what's going on with the DCEU, as no new projects have been announced for a very long time, while old ones have been either cancelled or shifted. WBD's new strategy is to develop a 10-year plan for their DC properties and likely this is part of that plan being put into place, even if it's not fully clear to audiences just yet.
