Should the Cowboys be worried about Dak Prescott’s struggles despite the team's overall success? DallasCowboys
The Dallas Cowboys are going to the playoffs. That much is certain. What is less certain is how far they might be able to go, especially given the recent struggles ofTo be clear, the Cowboys have proved themselves to be a good enough team overall to overcome the struggles of any one player, at least in the regular season.
But this is still the regular season when teams can overcome some difficulties against some lesser opponents. In the postseason, mistakes, especially from a quarterback, can be enough to sink a team, and Prescott has made a lot of mistakes over the last six weeks since his team came out of the bye.interceptions. Despite missing five weeks at the beginning of the season, this recent stretch has had him climb up to the five-way tie for third place in the NFL in passes intercepted.
A big reason for that has been some poor decision-making on Prescott’s part in recent weeks. Often, rather than taking what the defense gives him quickly, the signal-caller tries to find a bigger play, which can often lead to sacks, bad throws, or interceptions. Usually, those bad outcomes cause more moments in which he feels like he needs to continue to make even bigger plays to make up for a previous mistake.
There have been several instances this season in which the quarterback visibly looked away from his check-down or tried to unnecessarily keep plays alive instead of throwing the ball away, which led to negative plays for the offense. A couple of those instances came against the Jaguars in their loss this week.
On the first play of one of their third-quarter drives, Prescott didn’t get the ball out quick enough, felt pressure, and took the sack rather than throwing the ball away. Facing 2nd-and-18 one play later, he tried to make another big throw while feeling pressure in the pocket and threw his first interception of the game.
