Watkins, who is only a junior, was named the 2021-22 Gatorade California girls basketball Player of the Year Wednesday, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court. She has volunteered her time on behalf of the Watts Labor Community Action Committee helping with food banks, toy-donation drives and youth basketball camps.
