The producer of MLB The Show, Sony’s San Diego Studio is well positioned if it wants to make sure its video game has the most up-to-date information on the Padres before each annual release.
Some things, of course, are out of the studio’s control — like last week’s trade sending Dylan Cease to the Friars. The game will soon update rosters to reflect A.J. Preller’s 11th-hour trade. The virtual Padres, however, limping into the 2024 season as an incomplete team is more of a product of the team that Preller is rolling into the season with than anything.
803 means the team as a whole fell well short in replacing Soto’s production in the middle of the order despite some positive progression. Like Luis Campusano breaking out with 19 homers and Jake Cronenworth bouncing back with 16 homers and a respectable .796 OPS. Outside of the Big Three stumbling, there was one noticeable hole in the lineup: Jackson Merrill pairing 10 homers with a .588 OPS as a rare 20-year-old debuting in center field.
