Crucially, DB modernizers often leave theirs open and flappy, like a cardigan with oomph. This unleashes its secret weapon: volume. When fastened, it is boxy and precise—its lapel a tidy diagonal sash, its hem an unbroken line. Undone, a DB hangs slouchily in a way a plain old single-breasted blazer can’t muster. “It has [an] insouciance,” said Ms. Gordon-Smith.
