Out-of-wedlock births remain rare in China, though data is scarce. Researchers say the situation is likely similar to other East Asian countries such as Japan or South Korea, where single mothers account for only 2%-3% of births. Many women say that message is out of step with their thinking on when—or even whether—to marry. A nationwide government-based survey of women of childbearing age released over the weekend showed that on average, women got married for the first time at age 26 in 2020, compared with age 22 in the 1980s.
