People flock to indoor rock climbing for the community and an experience they can't get at home. Independent gyms are struggling to recover and stay afloat against competition.

Independent indoor climbing gyms, hit hard by Covid-19, are struggling against national chains looking to expandRock-climbing gyms are riding a wave of popularity, fueled by films including “Free Solo” in 2018 and the sport’s debut in the Tokyo Summer Olympics. Roughly 12 million people now climb in the U.S., according to Climbing Business Journal.

Operating costs are rising, squeezing independent entrepreneurs, industry executives say. Climbing gyms have unique space requirements, including high ceilings, specialized equipment and pricier insurance than yoga studios or fitness gyms. The owners say they had hoped to make a smooth transition to another location—the current one is being demolished for new apartments—but many of the lease offers have been too expensive.

The climbing-gym business has performed impressively compared with others in the gym industry because people value the community aspect of climbing, says Gavin Heverly , a climbing-industry consultant. Designed for climbing purists, GP81 was known for its steep walls, difficult routes and its “no birthday party” rule.
