Both Southern Methodist University and the University of North Texas have long and notable histories of training organists who’ve gone on to major church,...

Robert T. Anderson professor of organ and sacred music at SMU, and Donald Gillett of Aeolian-Skinner Organ Co., look over pipes of the 1965 Aeolian-Skinner organ in Caruth Auditorium at Owen Arts Center.

Anderson, also a driving force behind the Meyerson and other then-new Dallas organs, insisted SMU be up to date. And C.B. Fisk was then the highest profile builder of more historically informed, mechanical-action instruments. To make room for the Fisk over the Caruth stage, the Aeolian-Skinner was moved to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in North Dallas. After the elegant reserve of the Aeolian-Skinner, the Caruth Fisk delivered an aggressive, rough-and-ready sound.

Ironically, the choice was the sort of instrument found in churches all over the U.S. in early decades of the 20th century, but mostly replaced as tastes changed. Built by E.M. Skinner, the most prestigious U.S. organbuilder of that era, the 1927 instrument was removed from a New York church where it hadn’t been used in decades. Its restoration, reconfiguration and installation at SMU has been done by the Ortloff Organ Co. from Massachusetts, in conjunction with Plano-based Alden Organ Services.

“That is so nice about this project,” Engels says, “that it’s happening in a sacred space, where there are sacred services, where choirs and congregations sing.”If overpowering organs have been a challenge at SMU, the 2008 Wolff organ in UNT’s Murchison Performing Arts Center had the opposite problem. Much anticipated as a long-needed major mechanical-action recital instrument, by a respected Quebec builder, it was understated to a fault.

Eventually funds were secured for a three-stage reworking of the instrument, improving the mechanics and giving pipes more wind for sonic projection. Wolff having died in 2013, the work was done by another Quebec builder, François Desautels, who assisted on the original project and thus understood its shortcomings. Completed in summer 2022, the rebuilding gives the organ much more substance and projection.
