The Granbury ISD school board did the right thing Wednesday night in censuring trustee Karen Lowery in connection with her weird, clandestine visit to a high...
Lowery, who denied doing anything wrong, was elected in November making no secret of her desire to restrict access to books she thinks are inappropriate to children, especially ones that discuss sex, sexuality or LGBTQ themes. But her actions on Aug. 2 were cloaked in secrecy.
The district’s investigation found that she and the parent went to Granbury High School that day and told a clerk they were headed to the cafeteria to attend a supplies distribution event. Instead, they went to the library taking a “less direct route.” There as motion detectors triggered the lights, they switched them off, spending nearly an hour and a half looking through books under a flashlight.
The whole matter would be laughable if not such a sobering reminder of just how outlandish the school book ban debate has become, not to mention the willingness of some to believe in conspiracies. Did Lowery really think the only way to see what was stored on the shelves at the school library was to resort to sneaking around? Her actions smack of someone suspicious that any offending books would have been secretly removed had she made advance arrangements to go to the library and conduct her review in daylight like she should have.
But many in attendance at the raucous meeting were also appalled by Lowery’s conduct, and so are we. We’re glad the Granbury ISD board voted 5-2 to publicly scold her and send a clear message to the children of the district that they deserve better.
